A Theology of Togetherness: A Quaker Pastor Speaks

What is a Quaker pastor? Quakers believe we are all ministers and, according to the gifts we have received, are responsible for the care of the worship and community. Philip Gulley, a Quaker pastor in a programmed worship meeting, understands that in the unprogrammed Quaker community, there is great curiosity about what a Quaker pastor does as well as a little bit of skepticism. His lecture, A Theology of Togetherness: A Quaker Pastor Speaks, centers around how one lives out the Quaker pastor calling, its effect on the Society of Friends, for good or ill, and whether it might be a model usefully “employed” by unprogrammed Friends. He says “The days of us staring at one another across the ramparts must end; so let’s consider this a beginning conversation about how both models of Friends might energize and learn from one another.”

Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor and beloved writer and speaker. He is the author of 18 books, including the acclaimed Harmony series of novels chronicling life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana, and the best-selling Porch Talk series of inspirational and humorous stories. Gulley’s latest book, Living the Quaker Way, invites readers to encounter the defining commitments of the Religious Society of Friends — simplicity, peace, integrity, community and equality, and shows how those ideals can be incorporated in personal and public life to bring renewal and eliminate the clutter that is keeping us from deeper spirituality.

The Stephen G. Cary Memorial Lecture was endowed by Norval and Ann Reece and established in 2004 in concert with Pendle Hill’s publication of Steve Cary’s memoir, The Intrepid Quaker: One Man’s Quest for Peace.
