A Great People to be Scattered: The Life and Times of Pendle Hill
7:30pm in the Barn.

Pendle Hill is 85 years old! The mission, vision, and values held dear by Pendle Hill have touched thousands of people and helped bring peace and justice to the world. These values, rooted in Quaker tradition, have sought to uphold education, sustainability, social action, and justice through study, collaborative exploration, and interaction with the natural environment.

The celebration begins on October 5, 2015 when Pendle Hill opens its unique Woodworkers’ Exhibition and Auction. These artists, using wood from our 300+ year old beech tree that lost one of its branches during a recent storm, will be auctioning one-of-a-kind, unique wood items. The “State Champion” beech tree has been on our campus since the time of William Penn and is considered the largest beech tree in the State of Pennsylvania. The woodworkers also used Kentucky Coffee, walnut, and apple wood to make these beautiful pieces of furniture, sculptures, and other items.

Later that evening, Doug Gwyn, longtime Quaker and former Cadbury Scholar and Pendle Hill staff member, returns for our 85th anniversary to share observations about the ebbs and flows of currents of activism and quietism in the first 80 years of Pendle Hill’s history as detailed in his latest book, Personality and Place: The Life and Times of Pendle Hill (Plain Press, December 2014). There will be a book signing in the Barn following Doug’s talk.
