Writing Mindfully: Exploring the Sacred Ordinary in Story and Song
Carrie Newcomer Tuesday, 19 April 2011
This conversation will explore how paying attention to the small moments and
everyday miracles opens our hearts and our art to encountering the Sacred in
our daily lives. There is an art to paying attention and in doing so we
begin to discover the presence of the Sacred in the smallest or most unexpected places. Carrie will discuss her own progression as a spiritual musician and songwriter, the influence of sacred texts and the mystic poets, and how most authentic calls eventually lead to calls to service. She will
discuss the importance of developing a practice, finding unique voice, and the power of story to make connections and build bridges. Awarded a Grammy for songwriting in 2003, Carrie has performed throughout North America, Europe, and India. She is a practicing Quaker with dedicated involvement with peace, justice, health, and environmental organizations, and leads workshops in songwriting/creative writing, vocation/activism, and faith.
