Colombian Activist Hector Aristizabal Invites Audience into Theater of the Oppressed July 31
Hector Aristizabal, a human rights activist who fled his native Colombia under threat of death in 1989, will perform “Nightwind” on Tuesday, July 31 at 8:00 p.m. in the Barn at Pendle Hill. In this harrowing solo performance, Hector Aristizabal will reenact his arrest and torture by the US-supported military in Colombia and explore possible responses – violent rage, or a channeling of energy into the peace movement? The audience will be invited into the drama; everyone is a real-life actor on the world stage. This Theater of the Oppressed performance is free and open to the public.
After leaving Colombia for California, Hector Aristizabal earned an M.A. in psychology and a degree as a marriage and family therapist. He is also a theater director and actor who has worked with at-risk youth and developed original theater work under grants from the California Arts Council and others. He is currently the clinical director and co-founder of CITYSCAPE, an art therapy program. He has given workshops in Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Jamaica, Cuba, and India, as well as the United States.
