Lawrence Sexton  Exhibits Paintings at Pendle Hill

An  exhibit of oil and watercolor paintings by artist and Pendle Hill resident Lawrence Sexton is on display now in the Barn at Pendle Hill . The paintings include scenes from Greensboro, North Carolina; the Adirondack Mountains of New York; Monhegan Island, Maine; and Pendle Hill.

Concerning his approach, Lawrence Sexton notes, "As an artist, I am thoughtful about the arrangement of shapes, colors, values, spaces and the juxtaposition of objects. I am especially aware of the effects of light on interior and exterior objects and settings due to changes in time of day, weather, and seasonal influences. Of particular interest are landscape settings that include water in its many forms: creeks, rivers, ponds, puddles, lakes, fog, snow, etc. I am fascinated with the ability of water to be opaque, translucent, transparent and reflective, and the role these qualities play in our perceptions and emotional responses."

When painting, Lawrence Sexton reflects, "I become centered, open, receptive, and lose an over-riding sense of self." He finds that "a state of quiet prayerfulness grows" and "awareness of external interruptions diminishes." For him, the experience of painting is not unlike what he feels in Meeting for Worship - it is "often like being in the midst of a 'gathered Meeting.'" He is often drawn to paint outside, especially in the Adirondack region. He sees his Adirondack art as "testimony to the region’s greatness and lasting beauty, preserving its memory, becoming a touchstone and portal through which we are reminded of our physical and spiritual connectedness with our world and our humanity."

Lawrence Sexton has taught art at Earlham College and at the high school level. He was the recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission for 2006-2007. He is married to Carol Sexton, Pendle Hill's core teacher in the arts and spirituality.
