Carol Sexton Is New Arts & Spirituality Teacher
Carol Sexton started September 1 as Pendle Hill’s new Arts & Spirituality teacher. She brings a wealth of experience in teaching, campus ministry, spiritual direction, retreat facilitation, studio art, graphic design, and service to the Quaker community.
Carol’s arrival came as Sally Palmer retired at the end of August after a quarter century of teaching in Pendle Hill’s Resident Program. Sally’s teaching and consulting have nurtured creativity and spiritual vitality for hundreds of resident students, and she will be missed. While Sally’s “shoes” cannot be filled, Carol brings her own unique set of gifts and experiences to support resident students in the coming year.
Most recently from Richmond, Indiana, Carol served from 2002-05 as Campus Ministry Associate for Spiritual Formation at Earlham College, where she helped students consider their vocation and explore the connection between art and spirituality. She notes that she especially enjoys “engaging with students as they face challenges, make discoveries, and acquire new skills and insights.” She has led retreats in journaling and journal making and has extensive experience as a labyrinth facilitator and creator.
Carol has focused her education on art, teaching and spiritual nurture. She earned degrees from the Earlham School of Religion (M.Div. in Spirituality), the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (MFA in Studio Art) and the State University College at Buffalo (BS in Art Education).
An active member of Clear Creek Meeting in Richmond , Indiana , Carol was a member of numerous committees there. She also served as clerk, recording clerk and newsletter editor. She was active with Quakers in Pastoral Care and Counseling.
Carol and her family are settling into their new home at Pendle Hill. Her husband, Larry Sexton, is also an artist. Their son, Benjamin, is a high school sophomore, and their daughter, Sarah, is studying in Spain as a Rotary exchange student
