Sabbaticals

Pendle Hill offers a different kind of sabbatical for educators, pastors and other professionals: a sabbatical that refreshes your spirit. Here’s what people say:

“There was opportunity for contemplation and study, work and play, community and silence. All my expectations were fully met.” Doug Bartlett, Warren Wilson College

“I came to Pendle Hill on sabbatical after my seventh year as minister of Murray Unitarian Universalist Church in Attleboro, Massachusetts. At Pendle Hill I found a balance of contemplation and action and made deep connections with people of different religions and backgrounds. Most precious of all, I touched again the Spirit that called me into ministry in the first place.” Sandra Fitz-Henry, Unitarian Universalist minister

“Pendle Hill is a place where one’s academic agenda may deepen and take root in one’s spiritual life.” Steve Smith, Claremont College

“There is a richness in the simplicity of life at Pendle Hill. The contemplative emphasis, in the context of an ecumenical community, the classes, the art studio, and in the physical work, has made my sabbatical all that I had hoped for.” Lorelle Elcock, Dominican Sisters of Hope

Pendle Hill is an oasis for reflection with beautiful grounds, a library, a bright and spacious art studio and walking paths. Pendle Hill is located near more than forty colleges, universities and seminaries; Swarthmore College is within walking distance. We would be glad to work with the guidelines for sabbaticals of your university or church and arrange for you to do research at a neighboring institution.

See the information concerning Personal Retreats or Sojourns for more on what we offer. You are also invited to consider coming for a Resident Program term, if your schedule allows.
