Gaia's Garden: Organic Agricultural Techniques for the Home and Farm

When we work with the Earth we invite an intimate relationship with the mysteries of life. Seeking a working balance with the Earth's cycles is fundamental for agricultural practices and in turn, sustainable lifestyles. Students will learn how to weave the diverse energies at work in the garden to create a living system of beneficial insects, flowers, fungi, and vegetables.

We will share our own histories – how we came to love the Earth – and read excerpts from farmers, gardeners, and Earth care communities. Other readings will concern agro-economics, bioremediation, introduction to permanent agriculture, plant guilds, and rain gardens.

Students will be expected to visit the garden each day, keep an observation log, and design a garden of their own using the techniques described in class.

"I needed a place where I could breath, and grow, and figure out what was next. I feel that I am now springing off the board and leaping into what's next in my life."
