How it Works

How the Greenhouse Works

  1. Almost all the sunlight enters the greenhouse through the south roof. When the light is absorbed and emitted as heat, the heat is trapped in the greenhouse. At our latitude, a south roof at 45 degrees collects the most sunlight, and therefore provides the warmest greenhouse.
  2. Seedlings and starter plants arranged inside the greenhouse benefit from the constant warm temperature.
  3. Some plants need shade and protection from rain, and can be placed under the eaves.
  4. The cob and strawbale walls absorb heat by day and emit it by night, and provide insulation, so the temperature in the greenhouse remains relatively constant.
  5. There is also a small nook with a bench. Many people look forward to meditating or simply spending quiet time in the warm greenhouse.
