The Greenhouse Design

Rubble Trench Foundation

We dug a trench two feet below ground level then laid a foundation that extends 2-3 feet above ground level. The foundation consists of stone found on Pendle Hill campus. The flagstone and re-used brick floor is about 8 inches below ground level. The foundation is about 15 feet by 20 feet.

Posts and Roof

We culled hardwood trees from Pendle Hill's campus to use as support posts, and built conventional roof beams. The roof runs north-south and consists of clear ridged plastic screwed into support beams. The south roof starts at foundation level and climbs at about 45 degrees to a height of 11 feet, then gently slopes past the north wall.

Strawbale Wall

Straw bales are stacked like bricks to a height of 8 feet on the north wall.

Cob Walls

Cob is sculpted to form the east and west walls. (There are windows in these walls, but they aren't shown in this drawing).
